Some things we make. Some things we are given.

This one began at a table, with paper and colour pencils, in a room where nobody was trying to make a collection. We spent a day at Yayasan Humanisti among children who draw the way children draw, without hesitation and without editing. A tiger the length of a whole page. An octopus in water that is bluer than water. A chicken drawn around the shape of a hand, because a hand was there.

Children see the world differently. Softer, slower, filled with the small things the rest of us stop noticing. Their drawings reminded us that love can be as simple as making space for another way of seeing.

The piece

âmes for Yayasan Humanisti is a limited edition carré. Every animal that surrounds it was drawn by a student, kept as it was made, with nothing corrected and nothing tidied into house style. The imagination stays intact.

The artists are Jakaria, Akbar, Rahimah, Fahri, Zulfah, and Khanzaa, aged ten and eleven, in classes three through five. Their names travel with the piece. A scarf usually carries the memory of a place. This one carries the world as they imagined it.

The day

The afternoon fell within Yayasan Humanisti's nineteenth anniversary. There was a shared canvas that filled slowly and then all at once, a room of warm conversation, small hands bringing big stories to life. We came to give a workshop and left having been given the better part of the exchange. Beyond what we create, it is the connection that stays.

The commitment

A portion of proceeds from this edition supports Yayasan Humanisti, and the space it holds for children to learn, create, and express themselves. Every child deserves that space. Not as a reward, and not as an exception, but as a matter of course. We have kept this practice quiet on purpose. The point is the responsibility, not the visibility.
